E-Learning

Goal

To provide a means for any student who starts the program to complete his/her degree regardless of location and to allow qualified, new students to take EMGT courses and complete the degree.

Course Length

Elearning students adhere to the same schedule as on-site students.

Course Format

Varies depending on individual course structure and requirements.

  • Class web site materials include: outline, syllabus, lecture notes, etc.
  • Class lectures are streamed for the internet and available online.
  • Regular contact with instructor by e-mail, phone, fax, BlackBoard or mail.
  • Submission of homework, papers, presentations and projects via BlackBoard, e-mail, fax, mail, or videotape.
  • Proctored, timed or take-home exams.

Who can take E-Learning Courses?

Current EMGT students and new applicants to the EMGT program may take E-Learning Courses. New students (applicants) must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (on 4.0 scale) to be admitted to the EMGT program and to be eligible to take e-elearning courses. All students must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Live 60+ miles from the Edwards Campus. (Refer to http://cnn.com/travel/driving to determine distance.)
  • Travel more than half of the semester (requires verification from employer).
  • Have a work schedule (e.g., night shift) that does not allow classroom attendance (requires verification from employer).

If you do not meet these requirements but have other unusual circumstances, please contact the E-Learning Coordinator to discuss possible options.

Students may also switch between taking courses via E-Learning or as an in-class student. Frequently, this occurs when a student is sent on a short term assignment and would like to continue taking EMGT courses. E-Learning students are also welcome to come to class if they are visiting the Kansas City area.

Course Availability

Currently, nearly 75% of all EMGT courses are offered via e-learning. The E-Learning Coordinator works closely with faculty and students to identify course needs and add courses to the schedule. Please refer to the course schedules to determine which courses are currently being offered via e-learning.

How do I take exams?

The instructor may choose to have an exam proctored. In the event that a proctor is needed, the distance student will need to establish a proctor and coordinate with the distance education coordinator. In most cases, the student arranges to take the exam at their work site on a prearranged date and time. Exam materials will be sent to the proctor.

E-Learning Coordinator

The E-Learning Coordinator serves as liaison between e-learning students and instructors. Students are responsible for communicating with the instructor about homework assignments, exams, lecture materials and course content. The E-Learning Coordinator will help establish communication between the instructor and student if the student is unable to reach the instructor.

Besides the E-Learning Coordinator, you will be communicating with the professor (via BlackBoard, email, snail mail, fax, or phone). If a decision is reached during a phone conversation with the professor, please follow it up with an email to the professor and the E-Learning Coordinator.  Contact the E-Learning Coordinator at:

Tuition and Fees

At this time, there are no additional fees associated with taking an e-learning course. Cost is currently based on the Edwards Campus tuition and fee structure. However, it is anticipated that additional e-learning fees will be added in the near future. The EMGT department will work to keep any additional fees to a minimum and will provide as much advance warning as possible if additional fees will be added.

  • An email address
  • High speed Internet access (Cable DSL (56k) access or better, T1 or broadband recommended)

Textbooks

Textbooks are available on the internet from the KU bookstore. In addition, you may find textbooks available from other online sources or your local bookstore. Most of the EMGT class web sites list the required textbooks and the textbook ISBN number. Distance students should order their textbooks early so that they will arrive before the first day of classes.

Student Online Services

The University of Kansas uses online services for enrollment, bill payment, accessing grades, updating contact info, etc. Once admitted, students will be able to sign-up for a KU Online ID that will allow full access these services.
