Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to all aspects of managing a project within a company or organization. The entire project life cycle will be covered from inception to close-out, and many practical considerations will be discussed including material procurement, working with contractors and consultants, selecting software, and managing the project team. The course will focus on how to manage project scope, schedule budget, and resources using personal computer software. A semester project is required presenting an example of project management or investigating some aspect of project management in detail.
Includes identifying the power structure; risk and visibility of the project manager; alternative organizational structures; the functions of a project team; the integration of project management; work breakdown structures, interfaces and transfers; estimating, planning, control and allocation of time, money and technical resources.
This course is designed to give the technical professional familiarity with current Internal Project Management techniques. This course is different from EMGT 813 Design Project Management in Professional Practice, in that it assumes that Project Management is performed internally, in addition to existing responsibilities. The use of Teams will be integral to this course. As with other Management courses, class discussion and contribution is an important part of this course. The class will be divided into teams for a “Lab Style Survey Project”.
