Course Description
Management of technology and technological change through innovation, imitation, and obsolescence; planning, organizing, motivation, and control for innovation; organizational climate and its effects on innovative ideas and entrepreneurship; project/product decisions and R&D strategies in small and large companies; innovation in multinational corporations.
Course Content
The course addresses management of technology and technological change through innovation, imitation, and planned obsolescence, with an emphasis on development of personal innovation management skills. Topics covered include patterns of technological innovation, innovation cycles, building an innovative organization, new product development, and R&D-marketing interfacing. The course includes a requirement to develop a business plan for an innovative start-up company.
Objectives
Overall: To prepare students to manage innovation. Specifically: (1) To know and understand managed innovation in technologies, products, processes, etc., including related corporate management practices and industry dynamics; (2) to know, understand and be able to apply useful concept frameworks and process models related to innovation and innovation management; (3) to develop and enhance skills required in managing innovation within personal and small group situations; and (4) to know useful resources for further study of innovation management.
