Course Description

The class is designed to help the engineering manager understand how he/she and his/her firm must change to succeed in the world of globalization and the information age. The course will examine the B2B and the B2C challenge and how many firms worldwide have made the transition to e-business. Additionally characteristics of successful new age firms such as: boundaryless organization; harnessing people to create competitive advantage; pushing service and globalization: leading, not managing; increasing productivity of the knowledge worker; and redefining the value chain will be covered.  

Textbooks

Textbook materials will be available for purchase from Harvard Business Online. Details regarding registering and purchasing these materials will be posted in BlackBoard at the start of the semester.

Objectives

To provide the manager with the knowledge necessary to understand and discuss the following issues, and 2) to be able to use this knowledge to enhance one's career.

  1. How the history of the industry impacts the current shape of the industry.
  2. How are existing business processes affected by telecommunications?
  3. What forces are shaping the evolution of telecommunications?
  4. What business opportunities are being created by the evolution of the telecommunications industry?
  5. Who are the major players in the telecommunications industry? And what strategic choices are the major players making?
  6. How are the choices likely to affect telecommunications and other industries?
  7. Who will be the winners and who will be the losers in the next decade in the Telecom industry?
  8. Is Telecom a growth industry? Why, why not?
