Curriculum
The required 33 hours of coursework are divided into three areas: Core Courses (18 hours), Elective Courses (12 hours) and the Field Project (3 hours). The elective courses mirror the principal professional areas from which EMGT students come.
Engineering Management is flexible with respect to student's choice of electives and encourages students to select courses that really meet their needs. Our students have chosen technical courses from Business Administration, Public Administration, Engineering and Computer Science programs.
The concluding Case Studies and Field Project courses encourage practical, integrated application of concepts drawn from students' studies.
Working Professionals
The EMGT graduate program is designed for working professionals. Classes meet one night a week for three hours at the KU Edwards Campus – Overland Park, KS.
Most students attend part–time, take one course per semester and graduate in four to four and a half years. The average graduating time is three and a half years.
You can attend classes full–time, but the course load required is 9 credit hours, which for most working professionals is challenging. Internationals students must pursue a full load which is 9 credit hours per semester excluding summer semester.
Travel Conflicts
Pursuing a master’s degree while maintaining a full-time job is demanding, especially if you must travel for work. Most students prefer to be in the classroom but when it is not possible, the EMGT program has developed options.
Currently, 75% of all EMGT courses are available via e learning. Utilizing The Blackboard Learning System™, class websites contain most course materials (outline, syllabus, lecture notes, etc ); allows for student interaction, small-group work, and peer knowledge sharing via web-based tools; and facilitates the monitoring of the individual student’s grade progress.
In addition to the Blackboard tools, the EMGT Department has made the commitment to stream most class lectures and post
them to the internet the day after the class session. This allows the student to keep up with class even when they are traveling.
